AmeriCorps—A National Corps of Capable, Committed Individuals
AmeriCorps is a network of local, state,
and national service programs that connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s
critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.
AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000
nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have
provided needed assistance to millions of Americans across the nation through their AmeriCorps service.
AmeriCorps
opens the door for citizens to serve in a variety of ways. Through their service and the volunteers they mobilize, AmeriCorps
members address critical needs in communities throughout America, including
- Tutoring and mentoring disadvantaged
youth
- Fighting illiteracy
- Improving health services
- Building affordable housing
- Teaching
computer skills
- Cleaning parks and streams
- Managing or operating after-school programs
- Helping
communities respond to disasters
- Building organizational capacity
Full-time members who complete their
service earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student
loans. Members who serve part-time receive a partial Award. Some AmeriCorps members may also receive a modest living allowance
during their term of service.
AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency created to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to
their communities and their nation. The Corporation also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 1.5 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.
AmeriCorps
is made up of three programs: AmeriCorps*State and National, AmeriCorps*VISTA, and AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community
Corps).
- AmeriCorps*State and National: AmeriCorps*State and National supports a broad range
of local service programs that engage thousands of Americans in intensive service to meet critical community needs.
- AmeriCorps*VISTA: AmeriCorps*VISTA provides
full-time members to community organizations and public agencies to create and expand programs that build capacity and ultimately
bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. Learn more about AmeriCorps*VISTA.
- AmeriCorps*NCCC: The AmeriCorps*National Civilian Community Corps is a full-time residential
program for men and women, ages 18-24, that strengthens communities while developing leaders through direct, team-based national
and community service. Learn more about AmeriCorps*NCCC.
